Some notes on thick individualism.

  • Thick individualism considers the distinction between individuals and firms to be of more consequence than the distinction between small firms and large firms.
  • Thick individualism considers the distinction between individuals and the state to be non-analogous with the distinction between firms and the state.

It really sickens me that the word individualism has come to denote what should logically be called privatism.

I guess that depends on what role the individual is filling. The standard libertarian critique seems to assume that the individual is to the state as the customer is to the corporation, but I think a better analogy is that the individual is to the state as an employee is to the corporation. The State’s “customers” are really other States, as that is who they “do business” with.

Couldn’t agree more, but show me an “ism” that hasn’t had a 180 turn in meaning and I’ll show you an “ism” that isn’t part of mainstream discourse.
